NMU hockey: Baker, Kesti named Wildcats captains
MARQUETTE – Senior forward Ryan Kesti and senior forward Jake Baker will captain the 2014-15 Northern Michigan University hockey team.
They were voted co-captains by their teammates, Wildcats head coach Walt Kyle announced this week.
“Jake and Ryan exemplify the qualities we value in leaders,” Kyle said. “They are both excellent students and high integrity character guys that have their teammates’ full respect. They were selected by their teammates and are excellent choices. I feel very good about them and know the leadership is in great hands as we move into the coming season.”
Kesti was one of four Wildcats to appear in all 37 of the team’s games in 2013-14. He finished with three goals and seven assists as a fourth-liner and key piece on the penalty kill.
Baker played in 35 games, missing two due to injury late in the year. He had a goal and five assists with a plus-3 rating.
NMU finished 15-21-2 overall and 13-14-1 in the WCHA, good for seventh in the league. Northern bowed out in the first-round of the WCHA playoffs, getting swept on the road by eventual WCHA playoff champion Minnesota State.
Kesti and Baker are two of seven seniors projected to be back at NMU next season, along with forwards DJ Vandercook, Reed Seckel, Ryan Daugherty and defensemen Mitch Jones and Luke Eibler.
