Prep baseball: Marquette tops Superior Central twice in doubleheader

MARQUETTE – His team swept visiting Superior Central 7-0 and 14-2 Wednesday in Marquette.

But while Marquette Senior High School baseball coach Todd Koski was happy to see his team’s bats booming, he was just as pleased with its defense.

“I’m always impressed with good defense and we only had one error on the day,” he said after his team had improved to 2-3 overall this season. “We made the fielding plays we were supposed to make.”

In the first game, Brett Beauchamp tossed a six-inning complete game, allowing just two hits and a walk while striking out seven.

Gabe Apple and Jack Kochevar posted two hits apiece to pace the MSHS offense.

Losing pitcher Cody Maki rapped out two singles for the Cougars. On the mound, he surrendered nine hits and walked one while fanning one.

The second game saw MSHS hurler Garrett Finkbeiner give up just three hits and two walks in the mercy rule-shortened four-inning contest. He struck out seven.

“I can’t say enough about our two pitchers,” Koski said. “They were hitting their spots and putting pitches where they wanted.”

Trevor Koski – the coach’s son – hit a single and a double while driving in a run; Brandon Lotterman smacked a double and a triple to go with two RBIs; and Jake Phillips added a single, double and two RBIs.

MSHS scored 10 runs in the third inning to put the game away.

Brandon Maki had two hits and an RBI for the Cougars.
