MSHS Drama Club to stage comedy ‘Harvey’
MARQUETTE – The Marquette Senior High School Drama Club will be performing “Harvey” by Mary Chase Thursday through Sunday at Kaufman Auditorium in Marquette.
The story revolves around the eccentric Elwood P. Dowd and his invisible friend Harvey. Elwood lives with his sister Veta and her daughter Myrtle Mae but Elwood’s behavior and insistence that he has an invisible, six-and-a-half foot rabbit friend named Harvey is driving Veta to her wit’s end.
“I will tell you every part has a little bit of humor in it and if you like comedy you should definitely come,” MSHS senior Reilly Chabie said.
The Drama Club has been practicing for several weeks to perform the hilarious family-friendly story to theatergoers. Many of the performers have done multiple shows through the drama club and enjoy portraying characters and the freedom to make the story their own.
“It is a great way to express yourself,” Chabie said. “It is taking somebody else’s work and interpreting it the way you think it should be interpreted.”
Chabie plays Dr. William Chumley in the play, She has found playing a male role while being female a challenging but exciting experience. Chabie performed when she was in elementary school but didn’t start doing plays again until this past winter.
“I stopped for a little while and when I got to high school I realized that I still really wanted to be in the theater, however I was slightly intimidated by the people around me so I didn’t really join the drama club until this past winter,” Chabie said. “Then I realized there wasn’t much of a big deal and I really enjoyed being here, so now I have been in two other plays at this school.”
MSHS sophomore Michael Brzeziniski said he enjoys getting to meet new people when he performs as well as getting the chance to be someone else. This is his third show with the drama club. He plays Judge Omar Gaffney.
The play will be performed at 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday and 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Ticket prices are $12 for adults and $6 for students and seniors. Tickets are reserved seating and are available at EZ ticket outlets, Northern Michigan University’s Superior Dome and Forest Roberts Theatre ticket office.
