John ‘Jack’ Francis Madigan
MUNISING, MI. – John “Jack” Francis Madigan, age 82, of 402 Lynn Street, Munising, died peacefully in his sleep on Sunday, April 13, 2014 at the Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Marquette, Michigan.
Jack was born in Munising the oldest of four children on December 24, 1931 to John and Frances (Smith) Madigan. Jack went to work filling the furnace after school at his father’s Hardware store when he was twelve years old. He graduated from Sacred Heart School and then from Wm. G. Mather High School. Jack served in the U.S. Army from 1952 until 1954 where he earned the Commendation Ribbon with Medal Pendant and the Korean Service, United Nations and National Defense Service Medals. Jack returned home and continued to work at Madigan’s Hardware as part owner. He bought his first car in 1955, a Chevy, which was his pride and joy – until he met and married Evelyn J. Koskela on November 1, 1958. Together, Jack and Evelyn raised their four children. He was a faithful member of Sacred Heart Church where he served as a lector and usher. Jack was a member of the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus and he also served as the council’s Grand Knight. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and trap shooting. Jack won first place in the All-U.P. Trap Shoot in Escanaba and he competed around the state. He loved being the camp cook at deer camp and playing pool with his kids at the KC Hall. Jack was a member of the Alger Fish and Game Alliance, the D.A.V. and the American Legion. He also served as president of the U.P. Sportsmen Association. After moving to Jacobetti in June of 2011, he enjoyed making friends with the staff, going to all of the chapel services, physical therapy, shows, singing, ceramics, but his favorite was Bingo. Jack was a generous, gentle and caring man.
He is survived by his wife of over 55 years Evelyn Madigan of Munising; their children and spouses John (Kristin) Madigan of Munising, Jeffrey (Kelly) Madigan of Belding, Robert (Mary Pat) Madigan of Vulcan and Christine (Phillip) Johns of Ishpeming; eight grandchildren Kathleen (Leo), Nickolay, Karina, David, Marc (Meg), Kelly Jo, Benjamin and Madigan; sisters Frances Frazer of Sunnyville, CA and Alice Wanberg of Green Bay, WI; brother Richard (Karin) Madigan of Munising; and numerous nieces and nephews.
