NMU golf: Wildcats open spring season in Ohio today

MARQUETTE – The Northern Michigan University golf team opens its spring season today before taking part in the NCAA Regional II on Saturday and Sunday.

All this play takes place in Ohio, today at the Cedarville Invitational at Beaver Creek Golf Club in Dayton, then the NCAA event at Elks Run Golf Club in Batavia.

These will be first meets for new NMU coach Kyle Wittenbach after he took over the team in March.

Northern finished eighth at the GLIAC Championship in October, its highest finish in a dozen seasons. Its best ever showing at this meet was third in the 1998-99 season.

Junior Ayrton Mantha was the top finisher for NMU at the GLIAC Championships, placing ninth with an 11-over-par 227 on rounds of 71, 77 and 79. He was in second place after the opening round and third after two days.

Senior Mike Murphy was four strokes back at 231 in a tie for 20th. His 14-over total of 231 came on rounds of 75, 77 and 79.

Senior Jared Reid carded a 73 on the final day and finished one stroke behind Murphy in a tie for 27th, moving up from 49th going into that last round after scoring 77 and 82 in the first two rounds.
