Youth hockey: Marquette 16U girls open nationals with 5-2 win

MARQUETTE – The Marquette City Insurance Sentinels girls 16U hockey team opened the USA Hockey Tier II 16U Girls National Championship tournament with a 5-2 victory over Potsdam (N.Y.) Ice Storm on Wednesday at the Northtown Center in Amherst, N.Y.

The Sentinels rallied from a 2-1 first-period deficit by scoring three goals in the second period and another in the third.

Allison Carlson scored four of Marquette’s goals and assisted on a fifth by Sydney Higgins. Katie Pryor finished with two assists and Freya Holferty was credited with an assist.

Hannah Riesland stopped 14 of the 16 shots she faced as Marquette outshot Potsdam 32-16.

The Sentinels resume play today at 2:55 p.m. against the Princeton (N.J.) Tiger Lillies, followed by a 12:20 p.m. game on Friday against Boch/Charles River (Mass.) Blazers.
