NMU volleyball: Young Wildcats to host 11 matches in 2014

MARQUETTE – A relatively youthful Northern Michigan University volleyball team will have 11 home matches on its schedule this fall.

“We are excited to get the new season started,” said coach Dominic Yoder, who is in his eighth year at NMU. “Our young team will be exciting and talented as they gain valuable experience in a very competitive GLIAC conference.”

Yoder’s 2014 squad has no seniors and just three juniors while including seven sophomores and eight freshmen.

The Wildcats open with a nonconference match at home against Minnesota-Duluth on Sept. 4. NMU continues a busy weekend after Labor Day as cohost with Michigan Tech of the Husky Open in Houghton on Sept. 5-6 with a field that includes Bemidji State, Winona State and Upper Iowa.

GLIAC play begins Sept. 12 as Northern travels to Northwood and the following day at Lake Superior State. The Wildcats stay on the road Sept. 18-20, with matches on consecutive days in Ohio at nonconference Cedarville College, followed by GLIAC foes Lake Erie and Ashland.

The Green and Gold host its first conference match Sept. 23 at Vandament Arena against Michigan Tech.

Another season highlight is the GLIAC-Great Lakes Valley Conference Crossover Tournament Oct. 17-18 in Naperville, Ill.

The Wildcats end the regular season with a four-game homestand, hosting Wayne State on Halloween and finishing up with Northwood on Nov. 8.
