Billie Jean Nelson

DIMONDALE, MI. – Billie Jean Nelson, age 87, of Dimondale, died peacefully surrounded by family on March 22, 2014 after a brief stay at McLaren Hospital in Lansing.

She was born on August 22, 1926 in Grand Rapids. Billie resided in Grand Rapids most of her life and graduated from Union High School in 1945. Following graduation, she married her high school sweetheart, Carl Richard “Dick” Nelson. The couple lived in the Grand Rapids area while owning/operating several restaurants and raising their two children, Rick and Judy. Billie enjoyed cooking (which she was very good at; her apple pies were almost famous), camping, spending time with friends and family and going to “The Cottage” on Horseshoe Lake near Greenville, where the couple shared many happy summers for over 35 years. Billie particularly loved entertaining there, especially if it involved any of her grandchildren, all of whom she loved very much.

Billie and Dick moved to Dimondale in 2011 to be closer to their daughter and her family.

She is survived by her son, Rick, (Jeannine) Nelson of Marquette; daughter, Judy (Bob) Vertalka of Dimondale; grandsons, Eric (Teresa) Nelson and Casey Nelson; granddaughters, Emily (Dave) Umulis, Abby (Tony) Berdon, Jennifer (Tom) Delene; seven great grandchildren; and several nephews and nieces.

She is preceded in death by her loving husband, Dick (August 29 2013) to whom she was happily married for 67 years.

A private service will be held at a later date at Ft. Custer National Cemetery at which time, in accordance with her wishes, Billie will be interred next to Dick.
