Junior hockey: Marquette Royales win MnJHL tournament title
OREGON, Wis. – Jeff Salzbrunn scored 3:57 into overtime with assists from Lane King and Dallas McLaughlin on Monday to give the Marquette Royales Junior Tier III hockey team a 3-2 overtime victory over the Dells Ducks in the Minnesota Junior Hockey League playoff championship game in Oregon, Wis.
The Royales and Ducks – who are coached by former Northern Michigan University goaltender Bill Zaniboni – both advance to the USA Hockey Tier III Junior Nationals, which will take place April 3-7 in Simsbury, Conn.
The Royales trailed 1-0 after the first period and 2-1 after the second period, but McLaughlin scored 5:43 into the third period with an assist from Eric Hewitt to tie the game at 2-2.
Hewitt tied the game at 1-1 28 seconds into the second period with an assist from McLaughlin.
Marquette was outshot by the Ducks 57-27. Royales goaltender Walker Enstad finished with 55 saves.
