Edward B. Chaperon
ISHPEMING, MI. – Edward B. Chaperon, 87, of Ishpeming, died Monday morning, March 17, 2014, at the Marquette County Medical Care Facility in Ishpeming and also under the care of U.P. Home Health & Hospice.
Ed was born on January 16, 1927 in Big Bay, a son of the late Edward P. and Letitia (Aird) Chaperon. He was a 1945 graduate of Graveraet High School and immediately after graduation, joined the U.S. Army to serve during the end of World War II.
Ed retired in 1983 as a supervisor with the Cleveland Cliffs Iron Company after being employed there 33 years.
He enjoyed hunting, but was known to be more of an avid fisherman, preferring time on Lake Superior over any other body of water. He walked several miles a day in his retirement years, usually very early in the morning, even before he went fishing.
He liked cutting, chopping and piling wood as a hobby. Ed was previously an active member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Ishpeming.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, the former June LaValley whom he married on October 21, 1950 at St. Peter Cathedral in Marquette and for whom he always had a deep and abiding love; four children, Kathleen (Gene) Schroeder of Tucson, AZ, Mary (Marshall) Cohodes of New Berlin, WI, Edward G. (Mary Jo) Chaperon of Iron Mountain and James Chaperon of Ishpeming; 14 grandchildren, Andy and Adam Fuson, Mariah Chaperon, Molli Larson, Jessica Cohodes, Pamela Lundequam, David Cohodes, Amy Cvengros, Edward E. Chaperon, Kate Chaperon, Nathan Chaperon and Hannah Chaperon; also surviving are 23 great grandchildren; one sister, Sr. Therese Chaperon of St. Louis, MO and a brother, Lowell (Helen) Chaperon of Manistique; many nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death besides his parents was a daughter, Dianne Chaperon in 2005 as well as siblings, John “Jack” Chaperon, Carol Lynck and Colleen Soucy.
Friends may call at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church on Friday from 2 to 3 p.m. where a Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Greg Heikkala officiating. Spring burial will be take place in the Holy Cross Cemetery.
Pallbearers, all grandsons, will be Nathan Chaperon, David Cohodes, Edward Chaperon and Andy Fuson.
