NMU sports notebook: Wildcats earn All-American honors at NCAA swimming, track championships

MARQUETTE – Northern Michigan University freshman Rachel Borchardt and junior Debbi Lawrence capped the NCAA Division II Swimming and Diving Championships with another All-American performance on Saturday in Geneva, Ohio, to lead the Wildcats to a tie for 12th place overall.

Lawrence placed fourth in the 100-yard freestyle (50.15 seconds) to set an NMU record and earn All-American honors. Earlier in the week, she captured All-American honors in the 100 butterfly and 50 freestyle.

Borchardt took sixth in the 1,650-yard swim in 16 minutes, 58.83 seconds to earn her second All-American honor. She also earned the distinction in the 1,000 freestyle.

NMU’s 400 freestyle relay team of sophomore Crystal Bennet, junior Emily Bourguignon, junior Tara Dowling and Lawrence took 10th on Saturday and its time of 3:26.67 was a school record.

“I’m very proud of this team,” NMU head coach Heidi Voigt said. “We had an amazing season. It’s a great feeling to move up eight places and tie for 12th place at nationals from last year.

“Debbi and the relay team breaking school records today along with two more All-Americans was a wonderful way to end the week. I’m excited for each of these women to come back next season.”

Stewart, Toogood earn All-American honors

At the NCAA Div. II Indoor Track and Field Championships Saturday in Winston Salem, N.C., Wildcats senior Cheyenne Stewart and junior Christina Toogood earned All-American honors.

Stewart took eighth in the triple jump with a leap of 40 feet, 7 inches, a personal best and school record.

Toogood finished seventh in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:11.89.

“We traveled with two participants and are leaving Winston Salem with two records, two personal bests and two All-Americans,” NMU head coach Cheree Hicks said. “It doesn’t get any better than that. Coach (Jenny) Ryan and coach (Alex) Carradine did an excellent job of mentoring these two young women. We couldn’t be more proud of these two young women.”
