Great Lakes racers ski well at Central Division
MARQUETTE – Several youths had high overall finishes to highlight a group of Great Lakes Ski Academy alpine skiers who competed at the Central Division finale for the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association.
Held at Ski Brule in Iron River on March 8-9, the field included 140 boy and girl junior racers from around the Midwest. The event included five individual races, two slalom, two giant slalom and a Kinder Kombi, with points awarded by place to determine overall winners.
Guided by GLSA coach Dan Menze, Ainsley Kirk won the Under-12 girls overall title, while Anna Grzelak was runner-up among U10 girls. In addition, Aaron Grzelak was second and Hayden Kauppila third for U12 boys and Truman Durand was fourth in U14 boys.
Kirk won both her GS races, was second and fifth in the slalom and fourth in Kombi. Also in U12 girls, GLSA teammate Jacey Johnson was sixth and ninth in GS.
Anna Grzelak finished second in her Kombi race, third place in each GS and third and fourth in slalom.
Durand was fourth in Kombi, fifth in each GS and eighth in a slalom race.
Aaron Grzelak won his Kombi and one of the GS races while taking fourth in the other GS and fourth and fifth in slalom. Kauppila was first and second in GS, sixth in Kombi and ninth in one slalom race.
Also in U12 boys, teammate Colin Hicks was sixth and 10th in GS, Logan Audette eighth and ninth in GS and Matthew Marra had top-20 finishes in both slaloms and Kombi.
In U10 boys, Stephen Marra was seventh in both slaloms, ninth in Kombi and 10th in each GS, while Cole Johnson came in seventh in Kombi.
For the U8 boys, Brady Audette finished fourth and 10th in GS, sixth in Kombi and eighth and ninth in slalom, while teammate Benjamin Kirk was seventh in a slalom race, seventh and eighth in GS and eighth in Kombi.
