U10 girls win state championship

MARQUETTE – The Marquette Junior Hockey Association’s OB/GYN Under-10 girls hockey team won all five of its games to capture the Michigan Amateur Hockey Association state recreational championship held in Alpena from March 7-9.

The team outscored its opponents 23-10, including defeating the Suburban Freeze of Farmington 2-1 in the championship game.

Kaile Lane and Abby Bergmann scored Marquette’s goals in that game, with assists going to Madison Mishica, Lyndsey Lake and Mackenzie Tourney. Anna Byczek, who was in goal for all five games, was cited for making several key saves in this contest.

In the semifinals, Marquette outscored the Troy Honeybees 7-3 as Lane had a hand in every goal, scoring five times and adding two assists. Bergmann and Rianna Modehl also notched goals while Mishica, Bergmann, Lake and Lily Wilkinson added assists.

In earlier games, Marquette defeated Troy 6-3 with Lane getting three goals and an assist, Mishica two and Modehl one.

The eventual state champs also downed Grosse Pointe 5-1 with Lane getting another three-goal hat trick, Lake adding two goals and Lake, Mishica and Ava Young adding assists.

Marquette also beat the Suburban Freeze 3-2 with Lane getting a goal and an assist and Bergmann and Mishica scoring goals.
