Helvi H. Prusi

NEGAUNEE, MI. – Helvi H. Prusi, 85, of 314 N. Pioneer Ave., Negaunee, died at 5:05 pm on Tuesday, March 11, 2014 at her home with her loving family by her side, and under the care of Upper Peninsula Home Health and Hospice.

Helvi was born February 9, 1929 in Negaunee to Isaac and Mathilda (Liubakka) Winter and graduated from Gwinn High School, Class of 1946. She married the late George W. Prusi, Sr. on February 14, 1948 and they moved to Negaunee where they raised their family.

Mrs. Prusi was a member of the Negaunee VFW Auxiliary and the Negaunee Eagles Auxiliary. She loved libraries and reading, especially English mystery writers. She passed that love of reading on to her children and grandchildren. She never missed Jeopardy or Downtown Abbey and was thrilled beyond belief when her daughter Melissa became a three time champion on Jeopardy. Helvi was a loving soul who always thought of others before herself. Her pasties, pasty pie and her cardamom biscuit were treats enjoyed by her whole family. She had a beautiful singing voice and as young woman was in demand to sing at weddings. Her spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.

Surviving are 5 sons: Michael (Sandi) Prusi of Ishpeming, George ‘Bo’ (Mary) Prusi, Jeffrey (Tina) Prusi, Andrew and Joel Prusi, all of Negaunee; 3 daughters: Lois (Rodney) Guizzetti of Negaunee, Anita Li of Boulder, CO; Melissa (Steven Hopstaken) Prusi of Minneapolis; a brother: Leo (Leah) Winter of Vancouver, WA; a sister, Eleanor Lahti of Gwinn; 11 grandchildren: RJ (Leslie) Guizzetti, Carri (Jeff Marshall) Guizzetti, Michael (Dayna) Guizzetti, Heather (Paul) Wilson, Holly (Chris) Bridges, Rachael and Lauren Prusi, Andrew (Emily Fendryk) and Abram Prusi, and Matthew and Megan Prusi; 13 great- grandchildren: Tony, Nicklas and Jackson Guizzetti, Henry and Matilda Wilson, Theo, Isaac and Elliot Bridges, Emily Vercoe, Hannah and Mateo Guizzetti, Aidan Prusi and soon to be born Abrielle Prusi; a very special niece, Renee Prusi; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Helvi was preceded in death by her parents; her husband George W. Prusi on May 21, 2000; twin sons, Matt and Matthew; and her brother, Jacob Winter.

Funeral services will be held at 12:00 noon on Saturday, March 15 at the Koskey Funeral Home with Rev. D. Michael Carriere officiating.

Burial will be in the Negaunee Cemetery. Helvi’s grandchildren will serve as honorary pallbearers. The family will greet relatives and friends from 10:00 am until the time of services at 12:00 noon at the funeral home on Saturday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed in Helvi’s name to Upper Peninsula Home Health and Hospice, 1414 W. Fair Ave., Marquette, MI 49855.
