Family planning key

To the Journal editor:

This letter is in response to the March 8 article regarding the anti-abortion protest currently taking place outside the Planned Parenthood health center in Marquette

Ms. Bennett, a coordinator of this event, is quoted as saying that “an end of abortion is ultimately our goal,” suggesting that she and her fellow protesters believe that making abortion illegal will end abortion.

History shows that restricting access to abortion services is not a reliable means of reducing the incidence of abortion, as it does not address the fundamental need for family planning.

Furthermore, the “40 Days” website boasts of participation from groups and churches that are opposed to birth control. The majority of legitimate health organizations around the world, including

The American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, recognize that access to birth control is the most reliable and practical way to prevent unwanted pregnancies and subsequently prevent abortion among the sexually active.

Referring women to the anti-abortion center next to Planned Parenthood is deceptive as it suggests that this ministry could replace the primary health care and prevention that so many people receive when they access the licensed medical personnel at Planned Parenthood for their gynecological exams, STD testing and family planning needs.
