Shirley Lila Hoiem

PHOENIX, AZ. – Shirley Lila Hoiem, age 88, a life-long Ishpeming resident, passed away on Tuesday, February 25, 2014 at St. Luke’s Medical Center in Phoenix, Arizona.

Shirley was born on September 22, 1925 in Ishpeming, the daughter of the late Ed and Fern Girard. Shirley graduated from Ishpeming High school in 1943 and attended St. Luke’s Hospital School of Nursing in Detroit.

She worked for Bell Memorial Hospital in Ishpeming for 36 years, serving as head nurse for much of that time.

After retiring in 1982, Shirley and her husband Norman spent their winters in Tucson, Arizona where they made many dear friends. Shirley never completely walked away from nursing. In her retirement she spent many volunteer hours taking blood pressures and visiting with residents at the Ishpeming Senior High Rise.

Shirley was a longtime member of the Salisbury United Methodist Church. She also served on the Ishpeming Library Board and was a founding member of Marquette County Triad. She also volunteered for many years at the Marquette County Commission on Aging in a variety of capacities.

Survivors include her sons, Greg (Dawn) Hoiem of Ada, Michigan; Scott Hoiem of Phoenix; grandchildren Amy (Chad) Graves of Mishawaka, Indiana; Cindy (Wesley) Parkinson of Walker MI; David (Michelle) Hoiem of Grand Rapids; and Joshua and Jordan Hoiem of Ada. She has three great grandchildren, Reese and Logyn Parkinson and Jonas Hoiem. Her special caregiver and “adopted” son Tony Liu. A special niece Suzie (Ray) Ramsden of Ishpeming; and nephew Jeffery (Gayle) Cain of Grandville.

She was proceeded in death by her husband Norman who she married on December 28, 1945; and a sister Dorothy (Keith) Cain.
