Kenneth Allan Tuominen

ELY TWP, MI. – Kenneth Allan Tuominen, age 82, of 1526 Co. Rd. CP, Champion entered eternal life Thursday, March 6, 2014 at the Marquette General Hospital where he had been admitted earlier that day.

Ken was born January 19, 1932 in Champion, MI the son of the late Weikko E. and Mary R. (Armitage) Tuominen. Ken graduated from the Ishpeming High School, Class of 1949. He worked for the DNR for seven seasons as a Fire Towerman. He served in the United States Air Force as a Staff Sgt. during the Korean War (1952-1956). After his military service, Ken attended Northern Michigan University and graduated with a Masters Degree in the teaching of Mathematics. Ken married his beloved Helen Choat in Champion on June 7, 1958 and she preceded him in death on May 14, 2007. He worked as a teacher in Grand Marais, Rudyard and Negaunee. Ken retired from his love of teaching in 1987, due to his Mother’s grave illness and his dearly beloved Helen’s rare illness.

Ken had served as Supervisor of Ely Twp. for 24 years and had also served on the Marquette Co. Board of Commissioners for eight years. He underwent a serious heart operation at Marquette General Hospital in Dec. of 2003, during which one of his vocal cords was destroyed. Ken then spent several months in the hospital recovering from this surgery which was the first of its kind in the Midwest.

Ken was a former member of the St. Pius X Catholic Church and a current member of the St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. Ken was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Council #2894 of Negaunee for more than forty-five years. He was also a member of The Universal Living Rosary, and he loved going to Daily Mass as often as he was able.

Ken is survived by his sister Marline Worth of Humboldt, nieces and nephews Sue (Mike) Smart, Mary Steve, Connie (Winch) Diller, Mike (Ramona) Worth, Eugene (Sandi) Worth, and Albert “Bubba” Worth, his godchildren Candy Lindsey, Tammy O’Brien and Lucy Ostola, his special friends Missy and Jenny Lindsey, and Terri Ostola, and by numerous cousins and friends.

Visitation will be held from 4 6pm on Monday, March 10, 2014 at the St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 6:00pm on Monday at the St. John’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Fr. Greg Heikkala to officiate. Interment will take place at the Ishpeming Cemetery. A meal will be served following the Mass in the K-D Hall at the church.

Pallbearers will be Adam Ostola, David Bleau, Lowell Griffis, Nick Joseph, Gary O’Brien, Patrick O’Brien, Albert “Bubba” Worth and Robert Luoma.
