Join the fun!

To the Journal editor:

Since 1999, the Marquette Scandinavian Midsummer committee has been producing one-day festivals celebrating traditional culture of the Scandinavian countries.

We have done this each year with the exceptions of 2005 and 2013, when national FinnFest was hosted by Marquette and the Copper Country, respectively.

Since our 2012 Midsummer, several of our charter committee members have died, moved away, or have had to “retire” due to aging issues. Others of us have been aware that we have been “wearing too many hats” in this effort.

We take this set of circumstances to issue an appeal for new, hopefully younger, folks to take over some of the leadership/planning/organizing activities involved in producing this annual, cultural festival.

What kinds of leadership skills are we looking for? Our festival is like most others in needing efforts directed at fund raising (Midsummer does not charge admission), logistics of physical set-up and take-down, organizing volunteers (especially on the weekend of Midsummer), publicity, printing, etc.

As a celebration of traditional Scandinavian culture, we add to this typical festival mix such things as Midsummer symbols (bonfire and Swedish Midsummer pole) and the following Scandinavian cultural areas: music and dance, vendors, demonstrators of arts and crafts etc. We invite folks with interest and/or expertise in any of these areas to attend our next meeting to explore if there is a fit for you: 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church-use the parking lot entrance on High and Arch streets.

If we do not get adequate response, then 2014 may be our last Scandinavian Midsummer. If you cannot attend the Tuesday meeting, but have interest in exploring one or more roles in Midsummer, please contact either of us before the meeting. You need not be Scandinavian to join our committee.

The 2014 Midsummer will be June 21 at Presque Isle Park.

If you have questions about any of this, please phone or e-mail current co-chairs Bob (226-9617, rmrailey@excite.com) or Boli (226-9350, mdsbgs2013@gmail.com).
