Prep boys basketball: Negaunee Miners claim final No. 1 spot in UPSSA Class ABC poll
MARQUETTE – They split the regular season series between the two, but in the final Upper Peninsula boys basketball Class ABC poll of the season, Negaunee topped Marquette for the No. 1 position.
The Miners of coach Mike O’Donnell (19-1) picked up all five No. 1 votes cast by select members of the U.P. Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association to collect 25 points and grab the top spot. Coach Brad Nelson’s Marquette squad (17-1) garnered 20 points for the runner-up poll position.
Marquette beat the Miners 51-40 on Dec. 19 at Negaunee, but the latter knocked off the Redmen, 61-55, on Feb. 13 on Marquette’s court.
In the first game, the Miners played without No. 2 scorer Eric Lori, who was sidelined with a sprained ankle. That may had something to do with Monday’s poll balloting.
Negaunee is ranked No. 3 in Class C in the Associated Press poll. Marquette is an honorable mention pick in Class A.
Ishpeming (15-4) remains in the No. 3 position. Coach Jeff Olson’s Hematites, in the same Class C district tournament bracket with Negaunee, picked up 14 poll points.
Coach Mike Ostermeyer’s L’Anse Purple Hornets (15-4) moved into the top five. An honorable mention selection the previous week, L’Anse collected seven points, good for the No. 4 spot in the final poll.
In Class D, the Munising Mustangs of coach Dan Waterman (16-3) climbed up a notch to No. 3 with 13 poll points.
The team is an honorable mention state selection.
