Sled crash kills one in Dickinson County
IRON MOUNTAIN – A fatal snowmobile crash in Dickinson County early Sunday marks the 11th sledding fatality this winter in Michigan and the fifth in the Upper Peninsula, according to statistics from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.
Chad Schlenvogt, 37, of Port Washington, Wis., was killed in Sunday’s crash.
Michigan State Police at the Iron Mountain post said the accident was reported at about 2 a.m. Sunday and occurred along Pine Mountain Road near Lucas Road in Breitung Township.
A passerby discovered an unresponsive male subject on the shoulder of the roadway. Police said attempts to revive Schlenvogt failed.
Police were continuing to investigate the incident Sunday.
Officers said the snowmobile was traveling north on the west side of Pine Mountain Road in the snow. It appeared Schlenvogt attempted to cross back onto Pine Mountain Road and struck the guard rail on the west side of the roadway, police said.
Police said the sled overturned and Schlenvogt was ejected.
Troopers were assisted by the Kingsford Public Safety Department and Integrated First Response Ambulance.
By this point in the sledding season last winter, five riders had been killed in snowmobile crashes in the U.P. and 17 statewide. By the end of the season, another rider died in the U.P. and the number of snowmobile-related fatalities in Michigan increased to 23.
