Western U.P. man held after 3-hour standoff

IRONWOOD – A Gogebic County man was reported in critical condition after a three-hour stand-off in the city of Ironwood Saturday morning.

Officers from the Ironwood Department of Public Safety said the incident began at about 8:15 a.m. CST. Police were withholding the name of the 30-year-old man involved and the address of the home where the incident occurred.

Officers said they responded to a report that a male drank anti-freeze. Public safety officers, aided by Gogebic County Sheriff’s Office deputies, arrived with personnel from Beacon Ambulance.

Police said the man had allegedly poured gasoline throughout the house and had barricaded himself in an upstairs bedroom. Officers said the man was suspected to be suicidal after a domestic dispute with his live-in girlfriend.

Police backed out of the residence and called for additional assistance. The Ironwood Public Safety Department Fire Division responded, along with a police SWAT team. That tactical team made entry into the barricaded room and took the man into protective custody without incident.

Officers said the man allegedly asked them how much of the house had burned. It appeared to investigators the man had attempted to light a fire before barricading himself in the bedroom.

Police said he was taken to Aspirus Grandview Hospital and later transferred to another hospital for additional treatment. The female occupant of the home and an infant were relocated to another residence. Neither were harmed, police said.

Police blocked off a one-block area and residents evacuated to the Maplewood Steakhouse because of the potential for fire. Residents later returned to the homes and the house where the incident occurred posed no significant risk, police said.

Assisting at the scene were officers from Hurley, Wis., Wisconsin’s Iron County Sheriff’s Department. The Red Cross and Gogebic County Victim Services also assisted.

Crews cleared the scene at about 11 a.m.
