Prep boys basketball: Marquette clobbers Houghton

MARQUETTE – Placing four players in double figures scoring-wise, the Marquette Senior High School boys basketball team closed out its regular season schedule with a 62-29 non-conference win over visiting Houghton Friday night.

Vejas Grazulis paced the MSHS offense with 15. points on Senior Night. Larry Burnette III netted 13, and Andy Nyquist and Brad Brow tossed in 11 apiece.

Nyquist added eight assists, while Brow hauled down a team-high nine rebounds.

“It’s nice to end the regular season with a win,” Marquette coach Brad Nelson said after his club improved to 17-1 before beginning Class A district tournament play at 7 p.m. Monday at Alpena.

Marquette led 12-7 after one quarter and 31-13 at the half.

“We attempted too many 3-point shots and were just 3 of 14 from there in the first half. We were settling for too many 3’s,” Nelson said.

“But in the second half, we got down low and got higher percentage shots, for sure.”
