Sawyer facility to host senior dance Sunday

MARQUETTE The Black Bear Grill and Cave Fitness Center at KI Sawyer will be hosting its first-ever senior citizen’s dance Sunday.

Hannah Erickson, manager of the Black Bear Grill, said that the restaurant has had many suggestions to hold a senior’s dance since they opened their doors in July 2013.

“Then, there were two locals who came in and said that the facility would be perfect for a senior’s dance,” she said. “These two customers finally made up my mind to do it.”

Erickson said that if there is a big turnout, they will look to host the event every month.

“That is the goal in mind,” she said. “There is ample parking, and a huge facility that offers not only great food, but a great dance floor.”

She said that in addition to their full menu, the restaurant will offer sloppy Joes or egg salad sandwiches with chicken salad and potato chips for $5, as well as a variety of fresh baked pies.

The dance, which runs from 1-5 p.m. and is open to people of all ages, will feature live music from Tiny C Hart and the Hartbeats Band, door prizes, and a 50/50 raffle.

The Hartbeats have been performing their popular brand of classical country music around Marquette county for about 12 years, and they have become a favorite among senior events.

“There aren’t too many bands around the area that do the kind of music we do,” said Warren Hantz, who plays guitar, keyboards, and does vocals for the Hartbeats. “We play Johnny Cash, Buck Owens, and just all the old country artists. We do a little bit of everything from the 1940’s to the 1980’s.”

Hantz said that the band is excited to return to the Gwinn area, since they haven’t played in the area since June.

“We’re looking forward to it, and we hope to get it going again up there,” he said.

Hantz said that he thinks people should come out and attend the event because it is one of the only dances of its kind that is available in this area.

“It’s nice and close to home here,” he said. “It’ll help (people) get over the winter blues a little bit, get some dancing in, get some exercise, and visit with everybody and hear some good country music.”

The Black Bear Grill and Cave Fitness Center is located in the old “W” facility, at 301 Avenue A at KI Sawyer. The building is on the corner of Avenue A and 5th St. For more information, call 906-346-2318.
