Donald P. Carriere
CHAMPION, MI. – Donald P. Carriere, age 61, of 3101 Co. Rd. AAJ, Champion passed away on Saturday, February 22, 2014 at the Marquette General Hospital following a brief battle with cancer.
Don was born October 13, 1952 in Ishpeming, MI the son of the late Peter P. and Delores E. (Lahtela) Carriere. He grew up in Champion and was a graduate of the Champion High School, Class of 1970.
He served his country in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War aboard the USS Saratoga. Don had attended the Jacobetti Skills Center at NMU and received his associate degree as a certified welder. He had worked for various welding and fabricating companies over the years. Don went on to work at the Robbins Flooring Mill in Ishpeming for 20 years and most recently was working for the GSSC Security Co. at the Tilden Mine.
Don was a member of the Evergreen Christian Church in Negaunee and had also been a member at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Republic. Don was one of the first to have an outdoor wood furnace in this area and could often be found cutting wood wherever a tree had fallen. Don’s interest included collecting old books along with fossils which he would find.
Survivors include his wife Christine M. Carriere of Champion, 2 children Tonja (Todd) Opperman of Gardiner, MT and Jean Paul Carriere of Appleton, WI, a step-son Jason Kendall of Ishpeming, 2 brothers D. Michael (Annette) Carriere of Negaunee and James (Deb) Carriere of Champion, a sister Lisa Carriere of Mancelona, 4 grandchildren Matthew Garver, Trenton Kendall, Zander Opperman and Maxwell Moss, his mother-in-lw and father-in-law Bonnie and Ben Bray of Ishpeming, a sister-in-law Kathy (Terry) LaMere of Ishpeming and a brother-in-law Louie (Diana) Bray of St. Albins, WV, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a step-daughter Jessica Kendall on Dec. 23, 2013.
The family will greet relatives and friends from 46pm on Wednesday, February 26, 2014 at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home. Funeral services will follow at 6:00pm on Wednesday at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home with Don’s brother Rev. D. Michael Carriere to officiate.
Inurnment will take place at the Ishpeming Cemetery. Military honors will be accorded by the Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter #380 at the conclusion of the services.
