Prep basketball: Munising drops two spots in UPSSA Class D boys poll

MARQUETTE – The Munising boys were one of the few teams that moved in this week’s high school basketball poll released this morning by the Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association.

Unfortunately, it was a move down two places from No. 2 to No. 4 in the Class D poll after the Mustangs (16-3) lost two of their three games last week, even though the losses were to undefeated North Central by four points and Class B Menominee by five.

Cedarville and Forest Park each moved up a spot after the Munising drop with North Central continuing at the top unanimously as it has all season. Carney-Nadeau took the place of Lake Linden-Hubbell in fifth place.

In Class ABC boys, Negaunee (16-1), Marquette (15-1) and Ishpeming (13-4) remain 1-2-3 while fourth-place Escanaba and fifth-place Ironwood flip-flopped. L’Anse (13-4) also received votes for the second straight week.

With district tournaments for every team this week, virtually no changes occurred in the girls polls.

Marquette (18-2) is still third and L’Anse (17-3) fourth in Class ABC, while Ishpeming (14-6) and Westwood (13-7) each received a vote. St. Ignace was a unanimous No. 1 pick for the second straight week.

In Class D, Superior Central (18-2) is still second to undefeated Forest Park.

In state Associated Press rankings also released today, the Munising boys fell from eighth to 11th in Class D, missing the top 10 by 11 votes.

Negaunee remained fourth in Class C and Marquette dropped from 13th to 17th in Class A, missing the top 10 by 19 votes.

For the girls, Superior Central stayed in fourth place in Class D while Marquette slipped from 15th to a tie for 18th.
