NICE board adopts next year’s school calendar
ISHPEMING – The NICE Community Schools Board of Education adopted the district’s school year calendar for 2014-2015 at its meeting Feb. 17.
“It was really fast, it was a really light agenda,” Superintendent Bryan DeAugustine said of the meeting.
The district’s calendar for the next school year closely mirrors the one it is following now, DeAugustine said, but it must be negotiated between the school district and the NICE Teachers’ Association before it can be adopted.
DeAugustine said the reason the board didn’t put together a calendar for multiple years is because state lawmakers are looking at changing the required number of “student-contact hours” and the minimum number of school days.
Currently, state law requires 1,098 student-contact hours over a minimum of 170 school days. Because so many schools have used all or nearly all of their six alloted snow days, legislators are considering changing the way schools can make up any additional days they missed due to wintry weather.
