Prep hockey: Marquette, Negaunee need 3 wins to take hockey regional
MARQUETTE – Marquette starts with a home game while Negaunee will need to win its opener to get a contest at its own rink in the MHSAA Division 2 hockey regional tournament that starts Tuesday.
In Division 3 at Calumet, L’Anse will head north to play all its games starting later in the week.
The Redmen and Miners each have to win three games starting Tuesday to capture the championship in its seven-team regional.
At 7 p.m. Tuesday, MSHS hosts Kingsford at Lakeview Arena in Marquette while Negaunee travels south to play at Escanaba.
Those teams form the upper half of the bracket, while teams from Midland and Saginaw constitute the bottom half.
Tuesday’s Upper Peninsula winners play at a time to be determined on Thursday at the survivor of the Negaunee-Escanaba game, while the championship game will have a U.P. team facing either Midland, Midland Dow or Saginaw Heritage at 1 p.m. Saturday on neutral ground in Gaylord.
In the five-team D3 regional with all games to be played in Calumet, L’Anse drew a first-round bye and plays Houghton at 8 p.m. Thursday. That night’s 6 p.m. matchup is between Jeffers and the winner of Tuesday’s Calumet-Hancock game.
The D3 championship is set for 1 p.m. Saturday.
