Prep boys basketball: Cercone’s defense propels Munising

MANISTIQUE – Junior Nick Cercone got credit for his defensive effort in spurring Munising to a 59-39 victory at Manistique in a high school boys basketball game played Friday night.

“Our intensity level was not as consistent as I would have liked,” Mustangs coach Dan Waterman said after his 16-3 team built a 25-14 halftime lead against the 1-17 Emeralds. “(Manistique) got it down to six or eight points in the third quarter before Cercone got us going with his pressure on defense.

“We got a couple quick turnovers that led to easy baskets and suddenly our lead was back to 12.”

Teammate Ben Stasewich led Munising with 15 points and 11 rebounds, while fellow junior Alex Hill added 14 points.

Sophomore and recent JV callup Tony Hoholik led the Emeralds with 12 points and seven rebounds.

The Mustangs also won the JV game, 47-34.
