Robert W. Herman
PALMER, MI. – Robert William Herman, 75, of Nicholas Ave., Palmer, died at 1:25 pm on Wednesday, February 19, 2014 at Marquette General Hospital where he had been a patient for one day.
Bob was born January 7, 1939 in Ishpeming to William and Ruth (Savola) Herman, graduated from Negaunee High School, Class of 1956, and was a lifelong area resident.
He attended Michigan Technological University for 2 years, earned a bachelor’s degree from Northern Michigan University, and received his master’s degree from the University of Michigan. Bob began his education career in 1961, teaching and coaching at Holton High School downstate. He returned to the U.P. where he taught and coached at Negaunee High School until 1967 when he began working at NMU. He retired in 1997 with over 30 years of employment at Northern.
Mr. Herman was a devout and active member of the Palmer United Methodist Church prior to its closure. He served as the Chairman of the Board and Sunday School Superintendent for 30 years.
He was also very active in the community, serving with many organizations and on numerous boards. Bob was a member of the Richmond Township Fire Department and served as the Richmond Township Clerk.
He was a great trout fisherman and an avid sports fan, always cheering on his children and grandchildren. Most importantly, Bob was a devoted family man; he dearly loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
Surviving are his beloved wife of 56 years, Joyce J. (Trewhella); 4 sons: Robert Herman of Kalamazoo, Mark (Michelle) Herman of Iron Mountain, Michael (Jacalyn) Herman of Madison, AL and Ray (Sontia) Herman of Savannah, GA; 10 grandchildren: Angela (Dean) Leece, Robert Herman, Jr., and Lisa (Pete) Leeman, and their mother, Mary Herman; Alex and Alena Herman and their mother, Connie Herman; Jacob Cousineau, Michael Herman, Jr., Emma Claire Herman, Ray Herman, Jr. and Angel Wade; 3 great-grandchildren: Jared Nelson, Madeline and Griffin Leece; his brother, Roger (Julie) Herman of Ishpeming; his sister, Lois Fredin of Napa, CA; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Jean Meyers on January 13, 2014.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, February 24th at Immanuel Lutheran Church with Rev. Douglas Norquist, Pastor of Community Lutheran Church in Palmer, officiating.
The family will greet relatives and friends immediately following the service in the Immanuel Lutheran Church Hall at which time coffee and desserts will be served.
Interment will be in the Negaunee Cemetery.
