1 dead, 1 seriously hurt in Luce head-on sled crash
NEWBERRY – An Indiana man was killed and an Ohio man seriously injured Wednesday in a head-on snowmobile crash along Trail No. 9 in Luce County.
The Luce County Sheriff’s Office said the crash occurred at about 4 p.m. in northern Luce County.
Deputies said Joseph Brandel, 40, of Milford, Ohio was headed east on the trail when his snowmobile collided on a corner with an oncoming sled operated by Timothy Hearld, 43, of Larwill, Ind.
Police said Hearld was pronounced dead at the scene. Brandel suffered “multiple priority trauma injuries” and was taken aboard a medi-vac flight to an Ohio hospital. An updated report on his condition was not available.
Police said the crash remains under investigation and alcohol was not a factor in the accident.
According to Michigan Department of Natural Resources statistics, the death marks the fourth snowmobile fatality in the Upper Peninsula this winter and the 10th statewide.
Prior fatal crashes in the U.P. occurred in Marquette County on Dec. 31, Houghton County of Jan. 12 and Chippewa County, Jan. 18.
