Prep girls basketball: Poor night at free throw line costs Newberry a win at home
NEWBERRY – A poor night at the free throw line cost the Newberry High School girls basketball team Wednesday night.
The Indians went just 8 of 22 (36.3 percent) from the charity stripe in a 48-43 home loss to Cheboygan in a Straits Area Conference game.
“We got to the foul line. We just weren’t making our free throws,” Newberry head coach Hondo Depew said.
The Indians (11-8, 3-4 league) trailed the Chiefs (11-7, 3-5) by a 26-19 count at the half and were never able to come back.
“We had mental breakdowns on defense,” Depew said. “We gave up too many interior layups, then (the Chiefs) made five 3-pointers. They exploited us inside and out.”
Bridget Spoetzer paced the Indians with 13 points. Marissa Rushford added nine points and a team-high nine rebounds.
Cheboygan took a 44-33 decision in the JV game.
