MARQUETTE, MI. – Joyce M. Swingley, age 90, of Marquette, entered eternal life on Monday, February 17, 2014, at Marquette General Hospital in the loving care of her family. She had been hospitalized for a week following a heart attack.
Joyce was born June 30, 1923, in Bergland, a daughter of Elmer and Pearl (Fruik) Newberg. She was raised in Bergland and graduated from the Bergland High School as valedictorian of her class. It was during World War II, and like so many other young people of her time, Joyce relocated to Lower Michigan where she was employed in the war effort at a bomber plant near Ann Arbor. She later returned to the U.P. and moved to Marquette about 1952. She attended cosmetology school and after receiving her license, owned and operated her own beauty shop, LaPetite Beauty Shop, on North Third Street, for several years. Joyce and her husband resided in California from 1964-1971 until he retired from the military. They moved back to Marquette and spent six months every year in Florida where they enjoyed golfing. She had been a permanent resident of Marquette since 1995. Joyce was exceptionally gifted in many areas, including being an excellent seamstress, a great cook, and in later years a gifted artist…oil painting landscapes and wildlife especially. She enjoyed fishing and golfing, a sport she taught her grandsons.
Joyce is survived by her daughter, Cheryl (Richard) Nakarado Burke of Denton, TX; a son, Guy Nakarado of Marquette; grandsons, Sean (Sue) Green of Flower Mound, TX and Brett (Tanya) Green of Midlothian, TX; granddaughter, Britt Nakarado of Honolulu, HI; great-grandsons, Westley Green, Daniel Green, Karsten Green, and Harrison Green living in Texas.
Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Robert, two brothers and a sister.
A memorial service will be held at the Bethel Baptist Church, 829 Grove Street, Marquette, on Saturday, February 22, at 2:00 pm. Pastor Hank Steede will officiate. Burial will be in the Park Cemetery.
