Prep gymnastics: Marquette tops Escanaba, Negaunee

ESCANABA – The Marquette Senior High School gymnastics team topped Escanaba and Negaunee on Tuesday evening with its highest team total of the season to clinch the Upper Peninsula title.

Marquette, despite no individual first place finishes, scored 121.40, Escanaba had 119.60 and Negaunee scored 114.

The meet was dominated by Negaunee’s Emilie Thorvaldsen, who captured first place finishes in beam (8.80), floor (8.65), uneven bars (8.55) and all-around (34.60).

Thorvaldsen tied Escanaba’s Rylee Doucette for first in the vault with a 8.60.

For MSHS, Dinele Stewart was second on the uneven bars (7.8), while Mikayla Mitchell led the team in the other events, placing second on the beam (8.65), third on the floor (8.4), third on the vault (8.3) and second in the all-around (32.45).
