Prep basketball: Negaunee overtakes Marquette in Class ABC boys poll

MARQUETTE – A 61-55 road victory over Marquette last Thursday has vaulted the Negaunee High School boys basketball team to the No. 1 position in the weekly Class ABC poll.

Conducted by select members of the Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association, the poll has the Miners (15-1) of coach Mike O’Donnell with all five top votes and 25 points.

Negaunee is ranked No. 4 in Class C in the state Associated Press poll.

Coach Brad Nelson’s Redmen (14-1), after suffering their first loss of the season, gained 20 points in the U.P. balloting. Marquette had beaten Negaunee on the Miners’ home court 51-40 on Dec. 19.

Ishpeming (13-4) has moved up a notch to the No. 3 poll spot. The Hematites of coach Jeff Olson collected 11 poll points. Coach Mike Ostermeyer’s L’Anse Purple Hornets (13-4) are an honorable mention selection with one point.

In Class D, Munising High School (15-1), which lost to No 1 North Central, 45-41, on the road Monday night, is still chasing the Jets (16-0) for the top poll spot. In voting conducted prior to the game, coach Dan Waterman’s Mustangs collected 17 poll points to a unanimous 25 for NC. In the state balloting, Munising is No. 9.

In Class ABC girls’ balloting, Marquette (16-2) fell from No. 1 to No. 3 after a 74-65 loss to host Houghton last Thursday. Coach Ben Smith’s Redettes have 15 points to 25 for unanimous St. Ignace (16-2) and 20 for Houghton (20).

Coach Scott Lloyd’s L’Anse Purple Hornets (15-3) rest in the No. 4 spot with 10 points. Also gaining poll consideration were Ishpeming (13-5) of coach Tom Graves and Westwood (12-6) of coach Kurt Corcoran. Both teams picked up a poll point.

In Class D, the Superior Central Cougars (16-2) hold down the No. 2 spot behind Forest Park (18-0). Coach Greg Trowbridge’s SC squad trails the unanimous Trojans 25-19 in poll points. SC is No. 4 in the state poll.
