Prep girls basketball roundup: Munising girls defeat Big Bay de Noc

COOKS – Trailing host Big Bay de Noc 8-7 after one quarter of play, the Munising High School girls basketball team then went on a scoring rampage to claim a 50-38 Central U.P. League victory Monday night.

Coach Matt Mattson’s Mustangs outscored the Black Bears 32-11 over the middle two quarters to take control.

Karlee Decet led three Mustangs in double figures scoring-wise with 14 points. Marissa Immel and Frankie Mattson added 10 apiece, with Mattson also snaring a team-high 11 rebounds for Munising (13-6 overall, 8-3 CUP)

“The first quarter, we had a lot of turnovers,” Matt Mattson said. “But in the second, we didn’t turn the ball over. We made crisp, sharp passes and got the ball into the post.”

Chelsea Thompson paced the Black Bears (3-14, 2-9) with nine points.

Munising won the junior varsity game, 61-28.


Iron Mountain 48,

Manistique 36

MANISTIQUE – Iron Mountain, powered by a 21-4 second-quarter run, beat Manistique in Mid-Peninsula Conference girls basketball Monday.

The Mountaineers (2-16 overall, 1-10 MPC) halted a losing streak that started in mid-December.

Senior Elli McCole’s 14 points and 13 rebounds led the Mountaineers. Marti Pirkola (12) and Alena Herman (11) also helped Iron Mountain control the backboards.
