NMU men’s basketball: Hall scores 18 in Wildcats’ win over Wayne State
MARQUETTE – Freshman guard Marcus Hall tossed in 18 points to lead the Northern Michigan University men’s basketball team to a 74-66 GLIAC win over visiting Wayne State Saturday at the Berry Events Center in Marquette.
Junior forward Chavis Mattison added 17 points and led NMU (5-17, 4-14 GLIAC) with seven rebounds. Junior forward Justin Newell chipped in 12 points.
“We talked a lot (Friday) about coming out and playing harder,” NMU head coach Bill Sall said. “Today, we came back and played better basketball.”
Hall led the Wildcats in the first half with 11 points, though NMU trailed 27-25 at the break after junior forward Chavis Mattison converted a three-point play with seven seconds left.
A 3-pointer by Hall with 10:14 remaining in the game put the Wildcats up 45-42, a lead they never relinquished.
Wayne State (11-11, 9-10) was able to chip away at the NMU lead cutting it to four with six seconds remaining in the contest, 70-66.
Gerald Williams-Taylor led the Warriors with 20 points.
