It’s wellness month
MARQUETTE- February is known as a month for many things, but at Lakeview Elementary School in Negaunee, February is known as Wellness Month and the students and teachers are celebrating by being active.
Each grade will be – or has – participated in an activity this month that gets it active and playing. This past week the third-graders went to U.P. Sports Plex in Marquette to have some fun and burn off some energy.
“The kids are all excited and have been excited to go since they heard they were coming (to U.P. Sports Plex),” said third-grade teacher Sabina Carlson. “All this month there are different lessons and activities scheduled for each grade.”
Other activities going on include the junior kindergarten sledding in Ishpeming, the second grade tubing at Al Quaal in Ishpeming, the fourth grade swimming at the Negaunee High School pool and this past week the first-graders ice skated at the Negaunee Ice Arena.
“It’s a great way to promote being healthy and being active,” Carlson said. “It provides the students with something to do and to try something new like roller skating.”
The U.P. Sports Plex is an indoor sports facility that offers many different activities ranging from floor hockey to batting cages to tennis. The Lakeview third-graders had the option of batting practice, dodge ball, roller skating and floor hockey.
“This day is a wonderful opportunity for them because they’ve been cooped up inside for recess since about mid-December,” Carlson said. “There’s only been a few days here and there since then that the kids have been able to go out and play.
“This trip gives them a way to burn off the crazy energy they have.”
According to Carlson, some of the students have been to U.P. Sports Plex before, but most of them haven’t. John Plaxco, 8, a third-grader has never been there before.
“I’ve only been here before to drop off my sister, but I’ve never been inside,” he said. “I’m excited to try roller skating.”
Plaxco said it feels good to be able to get up and play after spending recess inside for so many weeks.
“I want to get outside to play but it’s been too cold,” Plaxco said. “So I’m excited to play here.”
Also, as part of Wellness Month, the staff has an option to participate in a 13-week wellness change, Carlson said.
“Each week we add something new to the challenge,” she said. “For instance we last week we had to work out four to five times a week and next week I think we have to try and drink more water.”
According to Carlson, Lakeview Elementary School has a wellness committee that comes up with the challenges and the activities for the student to do to keep them active and healthy.
