Prep boys basketball: Gwinn gets offensive to beat Manistique

GWINN – In what may be its best offensive performance this season, the Gwinn High School boys basketball team battered visiting Manistique Wednesday night, 81-58.

The Modeltowners, now 9-6 overall and 7-3 in Mid-Peninsula Conference play, placed four players in double figures scoring-wise: Justin Nyquist (18), Owen DeVooght (16), Justin Beauchamp (13) and Kylor Skinner (11).

“We moved the ball well and the kids created shots for each other,” GHS head coach Darren Sinnaeve said. “The bench played extremely well, too. Everyone scored.”

Gwinn led 39-26 at the half, then iced the game with a 24-point explosion in the third quarter.

“The kids really got after it in the third,” Sinnaeve said. “We put a little fire underneath them and they played more aggressively.

“We talked about taking charge in the third.”

Manistique (1-14, 0-11) got 18 points from Dylan Strasser and 13 from Coby Ryan.

Gwinn won the junior varsity game, 44-43.
