Davis falters, won’t medal

MARQUETTE – Former United States Olympic Education Center speedskater Shani Davis today failed to capture his third-straight gold medal in the men’s 1,000 meters at the Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia. He finished eighth in 1 minute, 9.12 seconds.

Davis, a native of Chicago who graduated from Marquette Senior High School while training at the USOEC, previously won gold at the Olympics in the 1,000 meters at the 2006 games in Turin, Italy and at the 2010 games in Vancouver, Canada.

Davis, 31, finished 24th in the 500 meters on Monday. He will race in the 1,500 meters at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday. Davis has won silver medals in the 1,500 in Turin and Vancouver.
