Prep hockey: Youngsters score four times to lead Negaunee over L’Anse 5-1
NEGAUNEE – The freshman class carried the day for Negaunee.
Trevor Borlace led with two goals and an assist as the Miners defeated L’Anse 5-1 in a high school hockey game played Monday.
After fellow freshman Erik Voskuhl scored the only goal of the first period, a power-play tally that Borlace and Jeffrey Mathews assisted on, Borlace scored twice in less than six minutes in the second period to stake Negaunee (6-15) to a 3-0 lead.
“We had a lot of freshmen step up,” Miners coach Darrel Sleeman said. “But this wasn’t a pretty win. We made the same mistakes we’ve been making off and on all season.”
Junior Michael Farley made it 4-0 before L’Anse (0-11) got its lone tally just past the midpoint of the third period. Sophomore Riley Thomson was assisted on the score by junior Kyle Maki for the only one of 18 shots that got by Miners goaltender Tyler Riutta despite the Purple Hornets having nine power-play opportunities.
Yet another Negaunee freshman, Neal Violetta, rounded out the scoring in the final two minutes with another power-play goal. Farley and juniors Chad Larson and Ryan Syrjala also had assists during the game.
L’Anse junior goalie Michael Turunen made 23 saves.
Negaunee has a makeup game at Escanaba at 7 p.m. today before going to Calumet on Thursday night.
