Installation service live on TV Tues.

MARQUETTE – Bishop-elect John F. Doerfler will be installed as the 13th bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Marquette at 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. Peter Cathedral.

Pope Francis named Doerfler, 49, the new bishop Dec. 17. Doerfler, a native of Appleton, Wis., had been serving as vicar general of the Diocese of Green Bay when he was appointed.

Because of limited cathedral seating, the diocese has arranged for WJMN-TV 3 in Marquette to broadcast the service live from 2 to 4:30 p.m. The Rev. Ryan Ford, associate pastor of Holy Spirit Parish and Resurrection Parish in Menominee, and Cynthia Thompson, WJMN-TV news director, will provide commentary.

The Mass will be streamed online. Interested viewers should log onto the diocese’s website, www.dioceseofmarquette.org, and click on the banner promoting the telecast.

WJMN also will provide a feed of the Mass via satellite to EWTN Global Catholic Network, which will air the program live and replay it at midnight. Catholic radio station WLCJ of Menominee, 92.5 on the FM dial, will broadcast the ordination and installation live.

WJMN is scheduled to air a special half-hour program at 7 p.m today, which will include an interview with bishop-elect Doerfler.

Archbishop Allen Vigneron of Detroit will be the principal consecrator of the Mass during the ordination ceremony, which falls on the Memorial of Our Lady of Lourdes. Archbishop Alexander Sample, 12th bishop of Marquette, and Bishop David Ricken of Green Bay will be co-consecrators.

Sample was installed April 2 as bishop of Portland, Ore. He was the last priest to be ordained a bishop in the Catholic Diocese of Marquette Jan. 25, 2006. Before that date, it had been more than 100 years since a similar ceremony had taken place. Most bishops were installed in Marquette after serving in bishops in other places.

“I look forward to serving the people of the Diocese of Marquette with joy,” Doerfler said in a news release.

Admission to the episcopal ordination and installation is by ticket only, but the public is welcome to greet the new bishop at a reception scheduled for about 4:30 p.m. immediately following the liturgy in the St. Peter Cathedral Parish Hall.
