Prep hockey: Marquette improves to 2-0 at showcase in Chelsea

CHELSEA – The Marquette Senior High School hockey team improved to 2-0 at the Michigan Public High School Hockey Showcase on Friday in downstate Chelsea with a 3-1 win over Woodhaven.

The Redmen (9-8-4 overall) rallied from a 1-0 deficit after the first period, starting with the game-tying goal by senior forward Alex Zerbel 8:47 into the second period with assists by junior defenseman Brett Specker and senior forward Cam Verigin.

Verigin tallied the game-winning goal 13:56 into the third period with an assist from Specker and junior forward Luke Schwemin added an insurance goal on the power play at 15:33 of the third with an assist from sophomore forward Tony Fredrizzi.

MSHS outshot Woodhaven 30-10 with sophomore goaltender Travis Cameron finishing with nine saves.

On Thursday, Specker scored twice and Zerbel added an empty net goal in the Redmen’s 3-1 victory over North Farmington.

Since starting the season 0-5-1, MSHS is 9-3-3 in its last 15 games heading into today’s 10:30 a.m. game against Kenowa Hills in Chelsea.
