Joseph O. Niemi

OWOSSO, MI. – Joseph O. Niemi, age 58 of Owosso, passed away suddenly at Memorial Healthcare in Owosso.

Funeral services will be held on Monday February 10, 2014 at 1:00 at Watkins Brothers Funeral Home, Jennings-Lyons Chapel in Owosso. Pastor Tyler Barleg will officiate. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Sunday 2-4 & 6-8 pm.

Joseph was born on December 24, 1955 in Escanaba, MI, the son of Paavo & Elizabeth (Olszewski) Niemi. He graduated from Eben High School in 1974 and enlisted in the U.S. Navy from 1977-1981 and was honorably discharged.

He married Barbara Harbenski-Passinault on May 14, 1977 in Munising, MI. Joe was retired from the Teamsters and currently worked at ADS in Owosso as a driver.

Known to everyone as “PaPa Joe”, he never knew a stranger and considered his coworkers as part of his family. Joe was a family man at heart with his world revolving around his grandbabies as he always called them. He always had a story and a joke for everyone he met. He loved camping and was always ready for a card game at a moments notice.

He is survived by his wife Barbara of Owosso, daughter & Son-in-law Tammy & Ron Arthur and 8 grandchildren; Travis & Tiffany Granger, Taylor & Aleah Arthur, Ashley, Tess & Tegan Passinault, Storm Mbony, and his little buddy, Blake. Six sisters; Kathy Lakenen, Carolyn Swanson, Joanne (Jim) Boyd, Lillian (Pat) Savage, Margie (Terry) Beauchaine, Lila (Bill) Lewis, 2 sisters-in-law; Angie Mitosinka, Margaret Hunt, 2 brothers-in-law; Jim Harbenski, Joe (Laura) Harbenski.

He was preceded in death by his parents, mother-in-law & father-in-law Margaret & Robert Nelson, daughter Tina Passinault, son Thomas Passinault, sister Lorraine Madash, brother Paul Niemi, 3 brothers-in-law; Tom Lakenen, Gary Swanson, and Tim Harbenski.
