ISHPEMING, MI. – Jean Lawson, age 73, of 1875 North Lake Dr., Ishpeming Twp. passed away on Thursday, February 6, 2014 following a 3 year battle with cancer. She was in the loving care of her husband Ken and the Lake Superior Hospice.
Jean was born September 30, 1940 in Negaunee the daughter of the late Ernest and Tellerva (Larson) Niemi. She grew up in Suomi Location and was a graduate of the Negaunee High School, Class of 1958. She married Ken Lawson in 1958, first residing in Ishpeming, moving to California, Arizona and Gwinn, MI prior to moving back to Ishpeming. Jean had worked as a registered medical transcriptionist at the Peninsula Medical Offices in Marquette for many years, retiring in 1996.
Jean and Ken enjoyed traveling with their 5th-Wheel to warm destinations in winter months during their retirement years. They spent time in Las Vegas, NV, Apache Junction, AZ, and areas in Texas and Florida. She was adventuresome and also enjoyed spending time at camp. Jean read voraciously, always wanting to learn something new.
Survivors include her husband of 55 years Ken Lawson of Ishpeming, 4 sisters Carol (Ted) Valeski of Quinnesec, Marlene (Duane) King of Covington, Violet (Larry) Joseph of Las Vegas, NV and Sherry (John) Lusardi of Ishpeming, a sister-in-law Doreen Lawson of Ishpeming, 3 grandchildren Rick (Bobbie Ayotte) Lawson Jr., Rachel (Ryan) Scott and Rebecca Lawson, 5 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a son Rick Lawson on Feb 4, 2009, a sister Mae Kassman and a nephew Brian Joseph.
The family will greet relatives and friends from 10:00 am until 12:00 noon on Saturday, February 8, 2014 at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Ishpeming. Funeral services will follow at 12:00 noon on Saturday in the church with Rev. Warren Geier to officiate.
Interment will take place at the Ishpeming Cemetery. A luncheon will follow in the church hall.
Pallbearers will be John Lusardi, Larry Joseph, Duane King, Ted Valeski, Bruce Lawson and Ryan Lusardi.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Bethany Lutheran Church, Memorial Fund.
