Prep skiing: Marquette boys ski to victory at Pine Mountain

IRON MOUNTAIN – Taking the top four places in the slalom, the Marquette Senior High School boys skied to victory Thursday on Pine Mountain in Iron Mountain. The Redmen compiled 29 points to easily outdistance runner-up Ironwood, which finished with 66.5. Iron Mountain/Kingsford took third with 81.5 points, and Houghton/Hancock came in fourth with 125.

Luke Johnson of Marquette won the slalom with a time of 58.04 seconds. Placing 2-4 were teammates Joe Weber (58.72), Dylan Larson (1:00.34) and Matt Anderson (1:00.60).

In the giant slalom, Robert Buchell of Ironwood took top honors with a 50.97 clocking. Adam Skendzel of Marquette was right behind at 51.04. Placing fourth was Travis Hindman of MSHS (51.46), while teammate Jacob Mackey finished fifth (52.19).

In the girls’ meet, Houghton/Hancock came in first with 27 points. Iron Mountain/Kingsford finished second with 75, while Ironwood placed third with 102. MSHS had no team score, as not enough Redettes took part in the meet.

NOTE: The MSHS boys are ranked No. 1 in Region 1 in the Michigan High School Mid-Season Alpine Ski Team Rankings. The Redettes are No. 2 in the Region 1 girls’ division.
