Board may support House bill
MARQUETTE – The Marquette County Board is expected to consider a resolution today in support of a state House bill requiring reimbursement of a veterans’ property tax break.
The board meets at 6 p.m. in Room 231 of the Henry Skewis Annex to the Marquette County Courthouse in Marquette.
Public Act 161 of 2013 enacted exemptions for disabled veterans pertaining to property tax payments. The proposed resolution states the board supports the state’s efforts to help disabled veterans financially, however, the non-collection of property taxes will result in a loss of revenue for local municipalities.
House Bill 5215 would required the state to reimburse a local tax collecting unit for any revenue lost as a result of the property tax exemption for veterans.
Other agenda items include consideration of a letter of support for the Ishpeming facade grant project and renewal of a contract with the county’s remonumentation director.
