Prep boys basketball: DeCaire nets 33 in Ishpeming victory over Houghton
ISHPEMING – Derek DeCaire turned in the basketball game of his high school career Monday night.
The 6-foot-0 senior poured in a career-high 33 points and grabbed seven rebounds to power Ishpeming High School to a 74-59 non-conference triumph over visiting Houghton.
DeCaire knocked down 17 points in the third quarter as the Class ABC No. 4-ranked Hematites improved to 9-2 on the season.
“He can score, but he had been struggling,” IHS head coach Jeff Olson said. “He had a breakout game tonight, though.
“He made 3-point shots, got some steals for layups and made some shots. He was unstoppable.”
Bobby Zhulkie added 16 points for Ishpeming, which broke the game open with a 23-12 burst in the third quarter.
“Houghton played a zone (defense), but we worked the ball around and shot well – 51 percent (on 30 of 58),” Olson said. “They also tried to pressure us and we were able to break that.”
Trent Keteri (18) and Nate Gockenbach (17) combined for 35 points for the Gremlins (8-4). Eero Niemela added 12.
