Leona Elizabeth (Blemberg)?Kevern

MARQUETTE, MI. – Leona Elizabeth (Blemberg) Kevern, 90, of Marquette, passed away Wednesday evening, January 29, 2014, at her home in the company of her husband and daughter.

Leona was born on April 5, 1923, in Marquette to the late John Frederick and Elizabeth Sadie (Van Parr) Blemberg. She was a 1941 graduate of Bishop Baraga High School. Leona loved to shop, and after graduation, she went to work as a sales associate for Montgomery Ward. Leona retired after 47 years of service, and continued to enjoy shopping with her daughter and granddaughter, who often had difficulty keeping up with her.

Leona enjoyed dancing, and met her beloved husband of 66 years at Kelly’s Slide in Negaunee. On June 5, 1947, they married at St. Peter Cathedral in Marquette, where Leona was a member of the Altar Society. Leona enjoyed living in South Marquette, and they built their home together across from her childhood home on Craig Street. Leona enjoyed bowling, and participating in the Marquette Elks Club with her husband. Leona was a dedicated and loving mother to their daughter. She was also a wonderful Grandmother, who enjoyed teaching her granddaughter to play gin rummy, make her special homemade fudge recipe, and dance the Charleston.

Leona was fearless and loved life. She also loved chocolate, celebrity gossip magazines, doing laundry in the summertime, keeping up with her daytime stories, and watching baseball games at Hurley field. Most of all she loved her family and friends. Those far away could count on handwritten letters in her perfect penmanship, and those near were always treated to her warm smile, hot coffee and sweet treats. She will be remembered by those who knew her for her kindness and compassion for others.

She is survived by her husband, Melvin Kevern; daughter, Jill (Steven) Koski of Marquette and granddaughter, Elizabeth Neville of Warsaw, IN; two sisters, Jeanette Pascoe of Marquette and Margaret (William) Nystrom of Sun City, AZ; two brothers, John Blemberg of Marquette and Ronald (Kay) Blemberg of Sun City West, AZ; two sisters-in-law, Joan Blemberg of Marquette and Mary Blemberg of Huntington Beach, CA; a brother-in-law, Walter Cook of Marquette; also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews.
