Prep hockey: Marquette scores seven goals, shuts out Kingsford
MARQUETTE – Early this season, the Marquette Senior High School hockey team had trouble scoring as many as two goals a game.
With a 7-0 home victory over Kingsford on Wednesday night, the Redmen have now notched 20 goals in their last four contests.
“We’re getting more offensive,” MSHS coach Doug Garrow said after his team had improved to 6-8-4 this season. “We moved the puck well tonight.
“We also played the body well and forechecked hard. We got a lot of turnovers.”
Cam Verigin scored two goals and added an assist, while Tony Fedrizzi chipped in two markers for the Redmen.
Luke Schwemin, Scott Frazier and Brett Specker contributed single goals.
Schwemin’s tally – one of four by the Redmen in the opening period – came just 1:31 into the game.
“When you score that early and get four goals in the first period, that takes the pressure off, especially on (MSHS goaltender) Travis (Cameron),” Garrow said. “He was able to settle down early.
“It was a good team effort all around.”
