Walker set to close, owners retiring

MARQUETTE – After serving the Marquette community for 133 years, Walker Furniture, Mattress and Sleep Center will finally end its impressive run. Owners Rick and Joan McCarthy have decided to retire and sell the store’s current building at 308 N. Marquette County Road 553.

Joan McCarthy said that since the building is still up for sale, they are unsure about the exact date the doors will close. However, they are looking to liquidate their entire inventory.

“We’re just playing it by ear right now,” she said. “If no one comes in and buys the building, then it would be around May 1. It’s really up in the air.”

Greg Wallace, manager at Walker Furniture, said the company still has furniture coming in from manufacturers; however, if an interested party comes in and offers money for the building, then the company would switch to an auction and clear out the furniture that way.

“Either we run out of furniture or the building gets sold,” he said.

Wallace added that there are a lot of great deals going on as a result, and some items are marked as low as 70 percent off.

The store will be holding a “Going out of Business” sale beginning on Thursday, and the special store hours for the sale will be 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.

McCarthy said that Walker Furniture has been family-owned since 1880, and she has been running it alongside her husband since 1998.

“The grandfather started it, then the sons took over, and it went to my husband’s sister,” she said. “Then, we bought it from them. It’s been down many generations.”
